High-precision earthquake locations are indispensable for a wide range of seismological studies, including seismic hazard assessment, fault rupture process analysis, and subsurface structural imaging. Here, we present a catalogue of high-precision relocated volcano-tectonic earthquakes recorded by the seismic network managed by the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia, Osservatorio Etneo (INGV-OE), during 2000-2025 and occurring in the Etna volcanic area.
The input dataset consists of the original earthquake phase readings and associated event information derived from the INGV-OE seismic monitoring catalogue. The input datasets can be accessed via the links provided in the “Input dataset” section.
The input phase readings were filtered by applying a minimum threshold of five P-wave readings per event, in order to retain events with a sufficient number of observations for reliable hypocentral determination. The resulting dataset include 312,807 P-wave readings, 154,015 S-wave readings, and 24,825 earthquakes.
Hypocentral locations were determined using the NLL-SSST-coherence (NLL-SC) probabilistic nonlinear location method (Lomax & Savvaidis, 2022; Lomax et al., 2024), using the 3D seismic velocity model proposed by Giampiccolo et al. (2020) for initial locations. NLL-SC is an advanced earthquake location approach designed to improve hypocentral precision across multiple spatial scales through the correction of seismic-wave travel times and the analysis of waveform similarity.
After relocation, 15,910 earthquakes with error ellipsoid semi-major axis length ≤ 2 km were retained, resulting in the final high-precision catalogue for 2000-2025.
The resulting annual catalogue includes the final relocated events and associated hypocentral parameters and represents a refined version of the original INGV-OE earthquake catalogue.
